Calendula Infused Oil

By Pure-N-Simple Soap

At this time of the year calendula is available and it is easy to make an infused oil that can be used as a facial moisturizer. Calendula is known amongst herbalists as “Mother of The Skin” as it offers anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties, which make it suitable for just about all skin conditions.

Materials

*materials available at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market

• Calendula (may be purchased fresh and dried) *
• Olive oil *
• 8 oz. glass jar
• Cheesecloth

Directions

Collect fresh calendula and dry it. Fill a glass jar 3/4 of the way with dried calendula and then fill the jar with olive oil. Stir, making sure all of the flowers are covered with oil. Let this infuse for 4-6 weeks. Strain the oil through a piece of cheesecloth, compost the flowers, and bottle the oil. Use a couple of drops and pat onto the face or wherever needed. A little goes a long way.

Soap and Skin-Care Makers Advocate a Pure and Simple Approach

August 1, 2016 By marketeditor

By Julia Howard

Skin plays a vital role in ensuring good health. This simple fact motivated Bob and Barbara Palulis to begin making natural soaps and skin care products for themselves and now for others through their business, Pure-N-Simple Soap.

“I made the choice to be more conscientious of my diet and with all of my skin care products,” said Barbara Palulis.

Added Bob Palulis: “We are healthier because of these choices.”

Pure-N-Simple Soap is one of the Saratoga Farmers’ Market newer vendors. The couple makes not only soaps but also shampoo bars, lip balms, lotions, herbal infused oils and salves and a line of laundry and linen products.

Barbara Palulis says, “We like to keep things simple.” They use olive, coconut, and palm oils as the base for their soaps, along with goat milk, essential oils as fragrance, and dried herbs that they often gather themselves for color. Their skin care products are often as simple as olive oil infused with calendula. As she put it, there’s “no need to spend a lot of money on facial moisturizer when calendula infused in olive oil works wonderfully to soothe and balance the skin.”

The couple began making their own skin-care products while studying nutrition. In doing so, they realized that good health was not just about eating the proper foods but also about care of the skin.

“Our skin is the largest organ of our body and is permeable,” said Barbara Palulis. “What goes on the skin absorbs into our body.“

They began making soap in 2008 in their farmhouse kitchen in Salem, NY, and moved eventually into a retail space at 207 Main St., in Salem. They currently sell their products there as well as at the Saratoga and Glens Falls farmers’ markets and some holiday shows. They also serve as suppliers to a handful of retail stores and will take orders via telephone (518-854-3320), e-mail (purensimplesoap@yahoo.com) and their website, www.purensimplesoap.com. To first-time customers, the Palulis’s recommend their gift pack, which includes a bar of soap, a two-ounce jar of lotion, and a lip balm.

“I really enjoy sharing with these products and what I have learned along the way, said Barbara Palulis. “The more I learn, the more I have the need to share with others.”

The Saratoga Farmers’ Market takes place from 3-6 p.m. Wednesdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays at High Rock Park

Wash Green and Clean's Karie Pastore
Karie Pastore

About 30 percent of adults and 40 percent of children suffer allergies, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Karie Pastore, one of the Saratoga Farmers’ Market’s newest vendors, is among them.

Pastore owns Wash Green and Clean, a line of all natural, allergen friendly home and body care products. She started her line in 2014, and currently sells four types of laundry detergents, eco-friendly cleaning products, pet products, and all-natural insect repellents and remedies.

“I started to make these products because I have so many allergies to so many products,” Pastore said, adding that the opportunity to sell her products at farmers’ markets and other outlets gives her the chance to help people understand “what ‘all natural’ really means.”

“So many products are labeled “natural” and still contain toxins and fragrance grade scents which can trigger allergic reactions.” Pastore said.

Wash Green and Clean uses no surfactants, phosphates, or sodium lauryl sulfates in its formulas. Its detergents are completely biodegradable, and all scents come from pure essential oils.

Pastore makes the products in a studio in her home in Ballston Spa. She sells through stores in Potsdam, Saratoga, Clifton Park, Glens Falls, and Albany, and is a vendor at three area farmers’ markets, including the Saratoga Farmers’ Market on Saturdays.

Pastore particularly enjoys selling at the farmers’ market because it gives her an opportunity to interact with people one-on-one.

“I love making and sharing products that I truly believe in,” she said. “Farmers’ markets provide me with the perfect outlet to communicate the simplicity and effectiveness of my all natural products and farmers’ markets have a reputations for encouraging healthful foods, products, and practices.”

Wash Green and Clean Bug RepellentPastore is particularly fond of her laundry detergent. It is not only an all-natural product but also a cost-efficient one. “The detergents use only 1 teaspoon in a high efficiency washers and 1 tablespoon in a regular washer,” she said.

She also recommends REPEL, a natural bug spray, and BITTEN.

To drive home the eco-friendly commitment, Pastore also offers customers a discount for returning empty containers of Wash Green and Clean products for recycling. She also accepts pre-orders, special orders, and requests for party favors and gift baskets. For these services, contact Pastore at at kariep.cherishnaturalsoaps@gmail.com or (518) 764-0212. You also can visit her Facebook page.

The Saratoga Farmers’ Market takes place 3-6 p.m. Wednesdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays May through October at High Rock Park.

Get ready to mushroom into a world of flavor at th Get ready to mushroom into a world of flavor at the Saratoga Farmers' Market! 🍄🌱 This week, we're thrilled to highlight the Mushroom Shop and their incredible selection of locally grown and harvested mushrooms. We spoke with owner's Jacob and Elysee to learn more.

Q: What are some of the health benefits associated with consuming mushrooms?

A: Mushrooms contain a multitude of medicinal compounds. The mushroom species Cordyceps militaris contains cordycepin, which increases your blood's ability to absorb and transport oxygen, improving exercise performance. Mukitake or Panellus serotinus possesses compounds that have shown in recent studies to improve liver function in people suffering from fatty liver disease. Reishi mushrooms improve immune health, warding off sickness and reducing inflammation. Other medicinal mushrooms include Turkey Tail, Chaga, Agarikon, Maitake, and Lions Mane.

Q: What inspired you to start selling mushrooms at the farmers' market?

A: We initially got our inspiration from a mushroom farm based in Tennessee called Mossy Creek Mushrooms. They have many videos on Youtube covering every aspect of operating a mushroom farm from building and maintaining equipment to harvesting and marketing mushrooms. Jacob has had an interest in growing mushrooms as a hobby for about eight years when he discovered a patch of oyster mushrooms growing in the wild. We got the opportunity to lease land in the beginning of 2021 and shortly after started selling at farmers’ markets.

Q: How do you recommend customers prepare and cook the mushrooms they purchase from you?

A: At our farmers markets we always provide printed recipes that utilize the mushrooms available during the current season. Like meat, mushrooms can be cooked in a variety of ways, such as sautéing, roasting, and grilling to create a flavorful dish. One of our recent favorites is a Spicy Crispy Lion's Mane Sandwich- a thick slab of Lion's Mane mushroom battered and fried on a toasted bun with spicy mayo and pickles. This is a delicious take on a chicken sandwich made entirely of whole, natural produce.
